Disrupting The Status Quo: The Cheryl Story

Disruptive or Determined? The Cheryl Thibault Story

Cheryl Thibault’s journey is one of grit, resilience, and unwavering determination. Her chapter, Disruptive or Determined?, in the #1 best-selling book Disrupting the Status Quo offers an intimate look into her transformative path from adversity to global influence. Her story isn’t just about success—it’s about breaking barriers, defying expectations, and turning pain into purpose.

Defying the Odds from the Start

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Cheryl’s life was never one of privilege. She was the middle child between two brothers and yearned for love and recognition. From an early age, she exhibited a rebellious spirit, craving attention and pushing boundaries. By the age of 13, she had left home, determined to carve her own path in the world.

Her teenage years were anything but conventional. Arrested at 14 for selling drugs in a bar, she was forced to face the harsh reality of her choices. By 16, she was pregnant; by 17, married; and by 19, divorced, raising two children on her own after enduring the pain of domestic violence and financial instability. Yet, rather than succumbing to her circumstances, she chose to rise.

Building a Career Against All Odds

Despite being a high school dropout with no financial backing, Cheryl clung to a dream—building a career in the beauty industry. But achieving this dream required immense sacrifice. The nearest beauty school was 400 miles away, and the only way forward was for her to leave her children with her parents while she pursued her education.

Determined, she funded her studies by selling stitchery at night through a home party plan. Her unwavering focus led her to complete her course in half the time, graduating with honors. The pain of leaving her children was unbearable, but she knew that the short-term sacrifice would lead to long-term security for her family.

Breaking Barriers in the Beauty Industry

Upon returning home, Cheryl’s hardships were far from over. She had barely unpacked when she was forced to take her children and seek shelter in a transition house for abused families. Starting over yet again, she found work in a salon, and soon recognized a major problem—many aspiring beauty professionals lacked access to proper education.

Instead of accepting the status quo, Cheryl disrupted the industry. She founded the first esthetics school in her province at just 22 years old. Her school quickly became a success, with a three-year waiting list. But with success came new challenges. A trusted employee betrayed her, secretly copying student records and attempting to sabotage her business by opening a competing school. It was a devastating blow, but Cheryl stood firm. She relied on her integrity, and her students, recognizing her authenticity, stayed loyal. Her school only grew stronger.

Overcoming Personal Tragedy

Success did not shield Cheryl from personal hardship. While working tirelessly to build her business, she received a call that no mother ever wants to hear—her six-year-old daughter had been hit by a truck. Rushing to the hospital, Cheryl saw her daughter’s face covered in blood as doctors worked to save her. Despite the trauma, her daughter’s resilience shone through. “It could have been worse,” she said. “It could have been a bus.”

This profound moment reinforced Cheryl’s belief in the power of positivity and perseverance. Even in the face of overwhelming adversity, she pressed on, knowing that life’s hardships were not meant to break her but to build her.

The Courage to Walk Away

Cheryl’s strength was tested once again in another abusive relationship. Seeking help from social services, she was given an ultimatum: leave the relationship immediately, or risk losing her children to foster care. Without hesitation, she packed up and moved back in with her parents, later relocating 1,000 miles away to protect her family.

With no job and little money, she and her children lived in a tent for months while she worked tirelessly at three jobs just to survive. Exhausted beyond belief, she endured each moment by taking life not just one day at a time, but one minute at a time. Her sheer willpower carried her forward.

Pioneering a Global Legacy

Cheryl eventually settled on Vancouver Island, where she rebuilt her life and career. But fate had another challenge in store. In 2006, she suffered a catastrophic motorcycle accident in the USA that left her in a wheelchair for nearly a year. During this dark time, she contemplated giving up entirely. As she wrote a farewell letter to her children, she had a life-changing realization—she had survived every hardship before, and she would survive this too.

Determined to adapt, she leveraged technology to continue educating students. She pioneered the first 100% online beauty school for esthetics and nail technology, revolutionizing the industry and making education accessible worldwide. Her former company, Mirage Spa Education Inc. (sold in 2024), now helps thousands of students fulfill their dreams globally.
